Dhaka, October 16, 2025 — The Shahbagh intersection in
the capital turned chaotic this afternoon as MPO-listed teachers broke
through police barricades and staged a massive demonstration demanding
the fulfillment of their long-standing demands, including salary revisions and
improved benefits. The protest disrupted traffic and drew attention from across
the city.
Hundreds of teachers from different districts gathered
in Dhaka to press for their rights under the MPO (Monthly Pay Order)
system. They demanded timely promotions, inclusion in government pension
schemes, and the resolution of salary discrepancies.
Tensions escalated when police tried to block the
procession from advancing toward the National Press Club. Ignoring repeated
warnings, the protesters broke the barricade and took control of a portion of
the Shahbagh intersection, chanting slogans and calling for immediate
government action.
Several demonstrators were reportedly injured during
the scuffle, while some fainted due to the heat and crowding. Emergency medical
teams were seen providing first aid on the spot.
A senior police officer said that law enforcement was
working to maintain peace and minimize public disruption. “We are allowing
peaceful protest but cannot permit road blockades that paralyze the city,” he
added.
Teacher representatives stated that they would
continue their protest until their demands are accepted. “We are not here for
conflict — we are here for justice. The government must recognize our
contribution and ensure fair treatment,” one of the organizers said.
As of the latest reports, traffic movement around
Shahbagh remains heavily restricted, with a large number of police deployed to
prevent further clashes. The situation is being closely monitored by
authorities, and discussions are expected to take place between teacher leaders
and government representatives soon.
